Our College

With the dawn of 2021, Kg/Mw/Zahira College Mawanella completes her journey of a century to the nation. This journey is a clear indicator that showcases the role of an educational institution in turning national educational goals into achievements.

Zahira College Mawanella is an icon in the educational development of people in the Mawanella area and the Sri Lankan Muslim community in general. It is one of the leading schools in Sri Lanka and the one and only Tamil Medium National School in the Sabaragamuwa Province that struggles to implement the broader national curriculum in its full swing.

The Hinguloya Government School, with 59 children, was formally taken over by a permanent teacher, T S Samuel, as Head in 1921 from the Central Division Korala Officer. Since then, School has taken the people of Hingulloya and its surrounding area from a traditional agricultural society to a modernized society within a century.

Throughout this historic journey, the School has passed milestones as follows. The first permanent building came up in 1955, and since then, the School got its momentum. The A/L Arts Stream started in 1662. Similarly, the School became a national icon when it started the A/L Science stream in 1972. With this science mission, the School registered itself as a leading institution for science education for Tamil medium students in the south. This journey of expansion took a paradigm shift when the School had the honor of having a separate building complex to house the Primary section- The Sri Lanka Korea Friendship School. It is unique in its type in Sri Lanka.

Now it is home to 3500 students who come elsewhere from the Island to have education at all levels: primary and junior secondary in Tamil and English Medium. At senior secondary levels, it offers Arts, Commerce, Technology, and Science streams encompassing a wider variety of subject combinations.
It also offers the highest number of major games and clubs in the Mawanella Education Zone. Soccer, rugby, football, hockey, basketball, martial arts, athletics, volleyball, chess, etc. are offered as sports. Army cadets, scouts, girls’ scout, western band, photography club, media club, young inventors club, adventure club, and Students’ Parliament are some of the clubs out of 54. We have students who brought fame to the country from internal arenas, especially from young inventors’ competitions, and students who set national records in athletics. The School is very famous for soccer.

To streamline all these journeys, the School ventured to take part in the national Quality and Productivity Competitions. Within a couple of years, it secured the National Productivity Awards – 2018 and 2020. This is a true indicator of our quality mission for the nation.
